General description of apex garden sheds

An apex shed has a pointed roof similar to the roofline of many houses. An apex roof has two sections that meet at a ridge in the middle, providing more headroom in the centre than at the sides. The apex roof shed is generally regarded as the most attractive-looking garden shed. This traditionally designed shed will look good in any garden setting.

Materials used in the construction of a garden shed

Cladding material:

To make the shed panels, we use Tongue & Groove boards

Roof and Floor material:

To make the shed roof and floor, we use Tongue & Groove boards.

Roof covering:

The roof is finished with a Polyester Reinforced anti-rip shed felt fixed to the roof boards. This type of roofing felt will last up to 3 times longer than many other shed felts. Fascia boards are attached during the installation process, adding to the appearance but more critical, fascia boards securely fix the roofing felt to the roof.

Under Floor Protection:

Pressure-treated bearers are an optional extra but highly recommended. A set of Pressure-treated bearers will help protect the floor and lower part of the shed by adding an airflow under the shed floor which will help with the drying times during wet weather. Pressure-treated timber bearers protect them from rotting and some insect attacks for a very long time.

Frame size:

The overall dimensions of the framing should be compatible with the cladding used in the shed.

Why is this important?

In brief: Our experience and trials have proven it is not always wise to use a frame with oversized dimensions.

Oversize frame

The cladding may not be thick enough and therefore strong enough to stop the frame structure from naturally twisting.

Using the wrong frame will weaken the structure of the shed panels after a relatively short time. A 50mm x 50mm frame should be used in conjunction with and is compatible with 22mm cladding. The same is true, using a framework with larger dimensions.

Undersize frame

Using a frame with dimensions of 28mm x 28mm or smaller is not recommended for tongue and groove sheds. It will not be sufficient to prevent the shed panels from bowing. There is a high risk that the cladding will twist away from the frame.

Our frame

In all cases, the nail type and size are significant. We have used 34mm x 34mm timber framing for many years with excellent results when used in conjunction with 12mm and 13mm cladding fixed to the frame with 34mm ring-shank nails.

Timber Treatment:

Every shed has a timber preservative applied to the exterior. To fully protect your shed, apply another coat of timber preservative within four weeks after installation.

The timber treatment used should be:

Suitable for exterior planed timber.

Suitable for exterior timber in ground contact.

Use Products that contain fungicide.

Note: To prevent water from penetrating the timber, pressure-treated sheds will need an extra coat of timber preservative at regular intervals.
